The City of South Perth Historical Society Inc is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the local history and cultural heritage of the South Perth area in Western Australia. Established in 1989, the Society aims to stimulate public interest in South Perth’s history, encourage historical research and publication, and advocate for the preservation of historic sites, buildings, and stories within the community.
The Society operates from Heritage House, a historic red brick building constructed in 1904, located at the corner of Mends Street and Mill Point Road in South Perth. This site, situated in the heart of the Mends Street heritage precinct, serves as the home of the Society’s Local History Gallery and the May Gibbs and Herbert Gibbs Art Museum, which showcases artworks from the City of South Perth’s May and Herbert Gibbs Art Collection alongside other items of historic significance to the district.
The City of South Perth Historical Society embraces the concept of “Active Heritage,” engaging the community through various initiatives including exhibitions, research, and educational programs. One notable project is the restoration and display of the Ferry Tram B15, housed in the Tram Barn adjacent to Heritage House, where community storytelling events are held to connect younger audiences with local history.
Heritage House is undergoing major conservation works to enhance visitor experience and ensure safety, with reopening planned in 2025. Meanwhile, the Society continues to assist with historical inquiries and provides a well-stocked gift shop featuring books on local history and May Gibbs’ Gumnut stories.
Volunteer-run and community-focused, the City of South Perth Historical Society regularly opens its doors to visitors on Fridays from 10 am to 4 pm and on weekends from 1 pm to 4 pm. Through its efforts, the Society plays a vital role in preserving the rich cultural tapestry of South Perth, fostering a deeper public appreciation of the area’s heritage.
