The Food Safety Information Council is a health promotion charity which aims to address the estimated 4.67 million cases of food poisoning in Australia each year that result in 47,900 hospitalisations, 38 deaths and cost to the economy of $2.1 billion. Our major activity is Food Safety Week held every November which launches our major summer campaign with TV and radio community service announcements, media interviews, social media and videos played in medical practices. We also conduct monthly campaigns on various food safety issues such as warnings not to pick or eat wild mushrooms, handwashing campaigns, fridge safety and using meat thermometers.
