The internationally acclaimed Sydney Symphony Orchestra is resident at the iconic Sydney Opera House and performs more than 180 concerts a year. In 2022 Sydney Symphony Orchestra emerged from the rolling restrictions imposed by the COVID19 pandemic and presented 153 performances to over 153,000 people, predominantly in the second half of the year when the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, our primary performance venue, reopened after 2.5 years of renewal works. In addition to the public performances in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall and City Recital Hall, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra presented three weeks of education concerts for school children across grades K8. Alongside these, we supported teachers with professional development and classroom resources to accompany the concert programs. We were also thrilled to be able to again tour to regional NSW, performing in Bathurst, Dubbo, Goulburn, Griffith, Newcastle, Nowra, Orange, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, Wollongong and Wyong. Eight early career musicians participated in the 38 week Sydney Symphony Fellowship Program which provided both performance and professional development opportunities helping to build their skills and support the sustainability of the sector. As well, the Orchestra presented two young musician workshops (one in Bellingen and one in Strathfield) and also partnered with the Regional Youth Orchestra to support the development of student musicians. The Orchestra continued its commitment to community impact through its Music4Health concerts, its work with the Autism Advisory Support Service and the prsentation of family concerts in Western Sydney. The multiyear commissioning program, 50 Fanfares, continued in 2022 with 15 new commissions premiered and many composers engaging with the orchestra to workshop their compositions ahead of delivery.
