North Victorian Buddhist Association
The North Victorian Buddhist Association is a nonprofit organisation established in 1994, primarily focused on promoting Buddhist teachings, cultural practices, and charitable activities. Registered under the Australian Charities and Not-Profits Commission (ACNC), it operates as a non-sectarian entity, emphasising Theravada Buddhist traditions while fostering community engagement and interfaith harmony.
History
Founded by Venerable Santhindriya Thero, the association established the Daham Niketanaya Buddhist Temple shortly after its inception. Initially formed to serve Melbourne’s growing Buddhist community, the temple became a hub for meditation, religious education, and cultural preservation, particularly for Sri Lankan migrants and broader Australian audiences.
Objectives and Activities
The association's core mission includes:
- Religious education: Offering programs on Buddhist philosophy, meditation practices, and language classes to preserve cultural heritage.
- Community services: Organising charitable initiatives rooted in Buddhist principles of compassion, including environmental projects and humanitarian aid.
- Cultural promotion: Hosting festivals and events to celebrate Buddhist traditions and encourage cross-cultural dialogue.
Activities are funded through public donations and volunteer efforts, reflecting its nonprofit status and commitment to ethical stewardship.
Governance
Governed by a committee under ACNC guidelines, the association prioritises transparency and community participation. It adheres to a weekly operational schedule for religious services and educational programs, aligning with its goal of accessible spiritual and social support.
Legacy
Over three decades, the North Victorian Buddhist Association has emerged as a key institution in Victoria’s multicultural landscape, bridging spiritual practice with community welfare. Its emphasis on tolerance and practical philanthropy continues to resonate within both Buddhist and non-Buddhist circles.
