Nungarin Heritage Machinery & Army Museum Inc.

The Nungarin Heritage Machinery & Army Museum Inc. is a non-profit organisation located in Western Australia. It is housed in a significant historical building that was constructed during World War II.

History

The museum is situated in an original Army Vehicle Workshop building constructed between 1942 and 1943. This structure was part of the No.5 Base Ordnance Depot (5BOD), which served as the largest storage facility for Army Ordnance in Western Australia at that time. The facility was a key part of Australia's defense efforts during World War II and was built at a substantial cost of approximately ten million pounds.

After the war, most of the camp facilities and buildings were sold. The Nungarin Shire purchased the workshop and initially used it as a Shire Depot. It was later repurposed to house the Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum, showcasing a blend of historical military and agricultural machinery.

Exhibitions

The museum features an extensive collection of military memorabilia, including:

  • 10th Light Horse Collection: Dedicated to Trooper Joseph William Spillman, a local WWI hero who served in the Gallipoli and Palestine campaigns and was one of only 15 Light Horsemen to receive the Military Medal.
  • Military Vehicles: Notable exhibits include the Dingo Scout Car, a Stuart Tank, and a Bren-Gun Carrier.
  • Historical Uniforms and Artifacts: Displays of military uniforms, badges, electronics, and other historical items.
  • Agricultural Machinery: A large collection highlighting the development of agricultural machinery in the region.

Operations

The museum operates seven days a week, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with closures on Christmas Day and Good Friday. It is run by local volunteers and relies on donations and community support for its operations. The museum also hosts events and welcomes group bookings.
