Popis

The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute Limited (IHMRI) was an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing health and medical research in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. It operated as a charitable institution with a focus on supporting research initiatives aimed at improving community health outcomes.

History and Operations

Established to foster collaboration between academic and clinical research sectors, IHMRI was originally a joint initiative between the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). The institute provided affiliate researchers with various services and resources to facilitate medical and health research, applying all donations directly to support these activities.

In June 2022, the IHMRI Board, in coordination with its founding partners, decided to formally close the institute. However, prior to closure, IHMRI had revised its strategic focus to concentrate primarily on clinical trials and translational research — bridging laboratory discoveries with medical practice — specifically targeting key health issues within the Illawarra-Shoalhaven community. This strategic realignment aimed to enhance collaboration and optimize research outputs benefiting regional healthcare, with ongoing support from UOW in terms of facilities and grant administration[1][3][4][5].

Governance

IHMRI was governed by a board of directors comprising representatives from both founding partners and independent members. The board included two directors from the University of Wollongong, two from the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, and five independent directors. The institute also had notable figures in leadership positions over time, including various chairpersons and executive directors.

Governance Structure

  • Board Chairpersons included George Edgar, Alan Pettigrew, Tim Berry (Acting), and Stephen Andersen OAM.
  • Executive Directors over the years were Don Iverson, Xu-Feng Huang (Acting), Mike Calford, Brett Garner (Acting), Alan Pettigrew (Acting), and David Adams.
  • The Chief Operating Officer role was held by Sue Baker-Finch and later Kara Lamond.
  • The institute’s patron was Dame Bridget Ogilvie AC, DBE, ScD, FRS, FAA, a distinguished figure in medical science and research[2].

Legacy

Though the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute Limited formally ceased operations in 2022, its impact on regional health research remains significant. The institute’s dedication to advancing translational research and facilitating clinical trials has helped lay the groundwork for ongoing medical innovation in the Illawarra region. The University of Wollongong continues to support biomedical and translational research endeavors in the region, maintaining the momentum initiated by IHMRI.

This summary captures the organizational purpose, history, governance, and legacy of the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute Limited as a key health research entity in New South Wales, Australia.
