Mater's name, Mater Misericordiae, translates from Latin as "Mother of Mercy," inspired by the original Mater Hospital in Dublin (established 1861) and earlier Mater hospitals in Pittsburgh and Cork. Over the decades, Mater pioneered numerous medical firsts in Queensland, including:

• Establishing Queensland’s first hospital laboratory in 1919.
• Installing the state's first deep X-ray therapy machine for cancer treatment in 1928.
• Opening the 80-bed Mater Children's Hospital in 1931, the first pediatric hospital south of the Brisbane River.

• Creating Queensland’s first Neurological Department in 1954.
• Opening the Mater Mothers' Hospital in 1960, with capacity for 140 mothers.
