MCF – Australian Childhood Foundation Training Program

Montessori Children's Foundation supports First Nations families raising young kids by providing education and support to remote and disadvantaged communities. The principal activities of the Group for the year ended 30 June 2022 were guided by a vision of a future where ATSI families can reclaim their place in society and where the quality of life for Indigenous children is enhanced by inspiring families to provide a rich and trusted environment that fosters independence, selfreliance and a love of learning and exploring. It currently makes its contribution through services to families in the form of parenting programs. The Group is principally involved with the development and deployment of its Raising Happy Kids parenting program. The Raising Happy Kids is a capacity building program for parents and carers that is designed specifically for ATSI families. The program is available free of charge to service delivery partners, early childhood specialists and interested members of the public. The Group provides materials, training and ongoing support to organisations and individuals who have decided to run its parenting program. During the year the Group supplied premises to provide a suitable venue for the program in Cairns.

Montessori Children's Foundation

The Montessori Children's Foundation (MCF) is an Australian nonprofit organization dedicated to making Montessori educational programs accessible to children, particularly within Indigenous and remote communities. Established to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in Far North Queensland, the foundation operates with a mission to enhance the dignity and quality of life for Indigenous children by fostering environments that promote independence, self-reliance, and a love of learning[1][2].

History and Background

MCF develops and delivers programs funded by the Masterman Montessori Indigenous Children’s Trust. With over 25 years of experience, the foundation focuses primarily on early childhood education, addressing the challenges faced by Indigenous communities due to geographic isolation and complex historical factors such as invasion and neglect. The organization emphasizes partnerships, sustainability, quality, and flexibility in its approach to education and community engagement[1][2].

Mission and Vision

The foundation’s core mission is to inspire families to provide ethical frameworks and trusted environments that empower children to thrive during their formative years. MCF envisions a future where all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children and their families are supported to flourish through culturally appropriate and evidence-based educational programs[2][3].

Programs and Activities

Raising Happy Kids

One of the foundation's flagship initiatives is the Raising Happy Kids program, a supported playgroup that integrates the Montessori philosophy with the Circle of Security parenting approach and the Abecedarian (3a) early learning model. This program is designed to nurture children’s development in socially and culturally affirming environments. Currently, the program operates at locations including YumiHaus and the Mooroobool Community Centre in Cairns[1][2].

Facilitator Training and Community Engagement

MCF invests in training Indigenous facilitators to sustain and grow Montessori educational delivery within their communities. Facilitator training enhances community capacity and supports culturally informed education. The foundation also actively engages with local families, promoting parental involvement, peer support, and capacity building to ensure holistic wellbeing for children and caregivers[2][3].

Evidence-Based Parenting Support

The foundation introduces evidence-based parenting programs tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, emphasizing culturally appropriate and effective approaches to early childhood development. This includes integrating Australian Childhood Foundation training programs to support families comprehensively[3].

Core Principles

MCF’s programs and initiatives are guided by four key principles:

  • Partnership: Collaborating closely with Indigenous communities and stakeholders.
  • Sustainability: Creating lasting and adaptable educational resources and programs.
  • Quality: Upholding high standards in Montessori education and early childhood practices.
  • Flexibility: Tailoring programs to meet the specific needs of diverse communities[2].

Impact and Testimonials

Families participating in MCF’s programs report significant improvements in children’s language skills, independence, and social engagement. Testimonials highlight the positive influence of the Montessori approach on children's development and the supportive environment fostered by the foundation’s activities[3].

The Montessori Children’s Foundation continues to play a vital role in bridging educational gaps for Indigenous children in Australia, delivering culturally respectful and high-quality Montessori education that empowers children, families, and communities alike.

Note: The organization operates under ABN 87114666170RR0001.
