International Brain Injury Clubhouse Alliance

The International Brain Injury Clubhouse Alliance (IBICA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and advancing a network of standards-based brain injury clubhouses. These clubhouses provide lifelong support to individuals impacted by acquired brain injuries, helping them achieve a meaningful and productive life within their communities.

History

IBICA received its formal identity in 2005, building on the Clubhouse International philosophy established more than 70 years ago. This model originally focused on mental health and has since expanded to include brain injury support. IBICA's member clubhouses span from New Jersey to Texas in the United States and extend into Canada.

Mission and Vision

IBICA's mission is to support and advance an international collaborative network of standards-based Brain Injury Clubhouses. Its vision is for individuals worldwide impacted by brain injury to have access to lifelong support and achieve the highest quality of life through such clubhouses.

Core Values and Operations

Brain injury clubhouses operate based on several core values:

• The Power of Membership: Members, rather than patients, take responsibility for decision-making and directing daily operations, fostering empowerment and independence.
• The Work-Ordered Day: Each day is structured around tasks that support the clubhouse, promoting cognitive skills through problem-solving and project management.
• Peer Relationships: Members work alongside staff and volunteers as equals, fostering supportive relationships and friendships crucial for recovery and quality of life.
• Lifelong, Voluntary Membership: Clubhouses offer consistent, long-term support, often supplemented by fundraising to avoid reliance on insurance limitations.

Programs and Outcomes

IBICA member clubhouses have shown significant positive outcomes:

• Brooks Clubhouse in Florida has assisted numerous members in reentering the workforce.
• Synapse House in Illinois operates a social enterprise, improving caregiver burdens.
• ADAPT Clubhouse in Virginia focuses on community reintegration through volunteer work.
• Brain Injury Network of Dallas reports improved quality of life among its members.

Governance and Partnerships
