Overview

The Free & Accepted Masons of Utah, also known as the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Utah, is a Masonic organization in Utah. It is one of the smaller Masonic jurisdictions in the United States.

History

Freemasonry in Utah began with the establishment of Rocky Mountain Lodge № 205 at Camp Floyd in 1858. This lodge was formed by soldiers from Johnston's army but was disbanded in 1861 due to the end of the military occupation. Following this period, several smaller lodges were established in Utah in the 1860s, including Moriah Lodge and Wasatch Lodge, which eventually contributed to the formation of the Grand Lodge of Utah in 1872[1][2][3].

The formation of the Grand Lodge was largely facilitated by three early lodges: Wasatch Lodge, Mt. Moriah Lodge, and Argenta Lodge. These lodges were chartered by different jurisdictions—Montana, Kansas, and Colorado, respectively—before uniting under the newly formed Grand Lodge of Utah[1][3].

Relations with the LDS Church

Historically, Freemasonry experienced significant challenges in Utah due to its strained relationship with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church). For nearly 75 years, members of the LDS Church were prohibited from joining Masonic lodges in Utah, contributing to the jurisdiction's relatively slow growth compared to others in the U.S.[2][4]. This prohibition was lifted in 1984, allowing for greater cooperation and membership[2].
