American Water Works Association

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is an international non-profit, scientific, and educational organization dedicated to improving water quality and supply. Founded on March 29, 1881, AWWA is the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world.

History

AWWA was established by 22 water utility managers, engineers, and operators who gathered at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The association's founding purpose was to exchange information to improve the management of water utilities for the mutual benefit of consumers and water companies. Initially, AWWA covered the entire United States and Canada, hosting annual conventions and publishing yearly reports. As membership grew, the organization formed smaller sections to cater to local needs. The first section, New York, was created in 1914, followed by others in subsequent years. Today, there are 43 AWWA Sections throughout North America.

Mission and Activities

AWWA's mission is to create a better world through better water. It achieves this by advocating for water quality and supply issues, publishing educational materials, hosting conferences, and developing industry standards. AWWA members include water utilities, treatment plant operators, scientists, environmentalists, manufacturers, academics, regulators, and other stakeholders in the water sector.

Standards and Publications

AWWA began developing industry standards in 1908, and its Standards Program is recognized globally. The association publishes over 150 standards covering various aspects of water management, including filtration methods, treatment chemicals, and pipe materials. Key publications include the Journal AWWA and Opflow, which serve as leading forums for industry insights.

Sections and International Presence

AWWA oversees 43 geographic sections, including 37 in the United States, five in Canada, and one each in Mexico and Puerto Rico. In 2015, AWWA launched AWWAIndia, marking its first international community.

Significant Initiatives

  • Water For People: Founded in 1991, it supports developing countries in improving access to safe water and sanitation.
  • Drinking Water Week: Established in 1988, to raise awareness about the importance of drinking water quality.
  • Partnership for Safe Water: Collaborates with the EPA and other organizations to enhance water system performance beyond regulatory standards.

Legal Status

The American Water Works Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, classified under EIN 13-5660277. Despite the confusion, the EIN provided in the query (237026162) does not match the recognized EIN for AWWA.

Revenue and Expenses

In 2022, AWWA reported revenues of $35.4 million and expenses of $32.5 million.

Challenges and Advocacy

AWWA has been involved in legal actions with the EPA regarding drinking water standards, advocating for scientifically grounded policies that benefit the water community.
