A 100+ year history of abandoned mine drainage (AMD) left the river lifeless. Today, thanks to the efforts of the KWA and other like-minded environmental organizations, the Kiski has made a remarkable recovery. As the water quality has improved, aquatic life is rebounding with the presence of freshwater mussels, hellbender salamanders, and threatened fish species.
