The Institute addresses a fundamental challenge in 21st century world: the need for new medicines and new strategies for the discovery of such medicines. Drawing on, and catalizing an interdisciplinary consortium of institutions worldwide, researchers in the Institute explore ancient books in libraries across the globe, bring to light and investigate their texts, and create on this basis a new knowledge that will ultimately lead to new discoveries and procedures for the integration of traditional resources into contemporary medical research.

Inspiring innovation from tradition Plants Medicine and Peoples in History Our Research and Collections are Looking for a New Home Fifty years ago Alain Touwaide embarked in an intellectual journey through the world of the plants medicine and peoples of the ancient Mediterranean World. Later joined by Emanuela Appetititogether theyhave assiduously traced and researched the ancient documents in librariesworldwidethat transmitted the plant and medical knowledge across thecenturies in the Mediterranean region. They have patiently built a reference library comprising most if not all the available scientific literature in the many topics touched upon in their research.
