💗 In 2009, neighbors Kathleen Christiansen and Barb Walton found themselves reflecting on their shared experience as cancer survivors. In that heartfelt conversation, they each expressed gratitude for their good health insurance and quickly realized that not everyone in their community was as fortunate. That simple moment of shared understanding sparked an idea that would change countless lives: the creation of the Pink Angels of Greenville. With a mission to support local cancer patients with expenses not covered by insurance—things like transportation, household needs, and comfort items—Kathleen and Barb turned their vision into action. As avid golfers, they launched their first fundraising event: a women’s golf outing at the Greenville Country Club. What began as a small, heartfelt effort quickly grew thanks to overwhelming community support, generous donations, and the shared belief that no one should face cancer alone. Partnering with the Community Foundation of Western PA & Eastern OH became a pivotal part of their journey. The Foundation’s financial stewardship has enabled the fund to make a greater impact than Kathleen and Barb ever imagined. With over $300,000 granted to make a meaningful impact in the lives of local cancer patients and their families, the Pink Angels of Greenville stand as a testament to the power of compassion and community. We grieve alongside our community in the loss of Tina O’Brien. In many ways, Tina was the matriarch of our Community Foundation, an extraordinary woman whose quiet strength and deep love laid the foundation for all we have become. Out of a moment of profound hardship, she and her husband, Paul, chose to bring hope to others by creating the O’Brien Children Memorial Fund. That act of courage and compassion became the very first fund of the Community Foundation of Western PA & Eastern OH, setting the course for everything that followed. Though Tina’s legacy will live on through Paul, their children, grandchildren, and the Foundation she helped found, she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
