The Susquehanna is the longest river on the East Coast. Its name 'siskewahane' is from the Lenape for Muddy River. The Susquehannock tribe lived in fortified towns in northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. They traveled the Susquehanna River in sturdy dugout canoes and on walking paths. Captain John Smith, an English soldier and explorer, first traveled the area in the early 1600's. The Susquehannocks then began a trading partnership for furs with the European settlers. Disease and conflicts with Europeans and other tribes caused the population to shrink. Those who remained joined with other neighboring tribes. The Wissahickon were a Native American tribe that inhabited our area before the Europeans. The word Wissahickon is from the Lenni Lenape word “wisameckham” or “wiessahitkonk” meaning “catfish stream” or “stream of yellowish color”. The Creek was once filled with so much catfish that one scoop of a net often carried more fish than a single person could carry. In 1826 Philadelphia built Wissahickon Avenue along the banks of the creek. In 1856 Wissahickon Avenue was operated as a toll road by the Wissahickon Turnpike Company.
