Here is the Green Eight Pointed Cross of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem. Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The disease affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes. Leprosy is known to occur at all ages ranging from early childhood to old age. Leprosy is curable and treatment during early stages can prevent disability. Leprosy is transmitted via droplets, from the nose and mouth, during close and frequent contact with untreated cases. From its foundation over 900 years ago in the Holy Land, the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem has cared for those suffering from Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) and still does today. News from the Grand Bailiwick of Germany The Baroque city of Gotha hosted the annual investiture of the Grand Bailiwick of Germany. Two new members were invested, five new postulants were received, and several brothers and sisters were promoted and honoured. Among the guests were members of the Grand Priory of Europe, the Netherlands, England and Wales, as well as the Hereditary Commandery of Rurich. The Lord Mayor also joined the congregation. In the evening, various speeches were held, primarily to thank the outgoing Grand Bailiff, Clemens Stroetmann, who will retire at the end of the year after 40 years of service to the Order. All those present rose to their feet in a standing ovation. In addition to a historical program, a Holy Mass celebrated with the local parish community concluded these wonderful days. (fb)
