We were saddened to learn of the passing of our former CEO and long-time Museum friend, Tom Krakauer. In 1985, Tom Krakauer became the CEO of the Museum. Over the next 18 years until his retirement in 2003, Tom transformed the Museum from a small hometown institution into a nationally respected leader in science and technology education. Under his visionary leadership, beloved additions like the Magic Wings Butterfly House came to life, and the Museum grew in both scope and impact. During his tenure, he secured six National Science Foundation grants, which helped shape the Museum’s future in informal science education and inspired all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Tom was more than a CEO; he was a beloved leader whose dedication to innovation, inclusivity, and community left a lasting mark not only on the Museum but also on the city of Durham. In 2024, Tom was honored as part of the History Groves project in partnership with the Museum of Durham History. His legacy bench sits in front of the Magic Wings Butterfly House, a space that would not exist without Tom’s passion and dedication. Current Museum President and CEO Carrie Heinonen shared, “Tom’s legacy lives on in every curious mind who walks through our doors.
