SMITHIES AT WORK Kimberly By Goytia ’26 Double major: Computer Science and Statistical & Data Sciences Concentration: Community Engagement and Social Change At ARISE (Advocacy for Refugee and Immigrant Services for Empowerment), Kimberly has been working as a Business Development & Finance intern, supporting projects from fundraising to cookbook publishing to farm development. No two days are the same, and she's learned that nonprofit work is all about pivoting, problem-solving, and staying creative. One highlight for her has been meeting weekly with Maddie DelVicario, experiential learning coordinator at Smith, who leads ARISE’s sister branch RISI and mentors at the Jandon Center. This experience showed her how technology can be used for advocacy and broadened what I thought was possible for my future. Her advice to Smithies: "Don't box yourself into one ‘right’ trajectory just because it seems like the clearest path. The unknown can feel daunting, but it is also where the magic happens. Be open to intersections, follow what excites you, and let your path be imperfect, nontraditional, and uniquely yours. You will find your voice and your place along the way, and it might surprise you just how expansive that place can be. With the support of the Conway Center, dedicated mentors, and a $10,000 Projects for Peace grant, Olohi launched The Peace Camp, a transformative summer program teaching English literacy, math, and coding to children in Kwali. Justice through Literacy is a nonprofit that’s shifting the narrative on education in Nigeria and empowering children through summer camps, mentorships and scholarships.
