At 93, Shirley Beachell’s life is a testament to the quiet strength that defines many women of her generation. While she held multiple jobs early on—working for a construction and paving company, then as a phone operator at a milk plant—her path soon shifted. After marrying the love of her life, she left the workforce to focus on what she saw as her most important role: a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Hers is a story of commitment, sacrifice, and an unwavering dedication to family. Her devotion to her husband is clear in the way she gestures toward his framed portrait near her bedside —her “handsome guy.” Together, they built a life filled with adventure and raised a daughter while following his military career across the country. From San Antonio, TX, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Idaho, she stood by his side as he trained for deployment - a "flat top". After his service took him as far as Bermuda and Tripoli, the capital of Libya, “he returned home to me.” Shirley’s own role was far from easy. “Just hard work!” she says of being a woman. “I was a housewife, surely a job within itself, because we had a big yard, and I did all of the trimming and upkeep myself. Then, when my husband went into the service, I went with him.” Years later, the Beachells settled in and began caring for elderly parents. Then, upon losing her husband after many years together, she moved to Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, to live with her daughter. Now, at Coffman Nursing Home, she reflects on a life well-lived. Her advice for women today? “Keep going and know that they’re equal. Work hard. Do whatever you want to do, but do it right.” And when asked about the women who inspired her most, she doesn’t hesitate. “My mother was an incredible woman. She used to say, ‘Do everything you can.
