Before the school year starts, visit a historic house with an interesting schoolhouse past! In 1846, the Troth and Gillingham families purchased Woodlawn from the Lewis family. For these Quaker families, education was important and began at home, where women instructed their children in the Friends’ values or “testimonies” of peace, equality, simplicity, and integrity. They established schools based on the principles that all children should be educated regardless of their sex or race. At Woodlawn, they used rooms in the home as a school and held religious services there until the Woodlawn Quaker Meeting House was built in 1853.
