In a twelve-hour span, Brody went from playing cornhole and swimming to being life-flighted to the CICU at Children’s because his heart was failing. Within hours, he was placed on ECMO—the highest level of life support—with his heart functioning at less than 10% due to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. After two long months in our hospital undergoing physical, speech and occupational therapy, Brody’s family received the call: a new heart was ready for him. Since his successful heart transplant nearly six years ago, Brody has made a full recovery, earned his black belt in taekwondo, is playing sports and making straight A’s in school. (fb)

This homecoming queen did not let her cancer dull her sparkle. Aubrey noticed a lump on her neck at the beginning of her senior year. As it grew in size and started to cause more discomfort, she was referred to our Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center where our doctors diagnosed her with Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive and fast-growing cancer. Despite being in the hospital, Aubrey was voted homecoming queen by her classmates. With a life-sized cutout of Aubrey in tow, her brothers proudly accepted the crown on her behalf and delivered it to her to wear in the hospital. 👑 After ringing the bell to signify the end of treatment, Aubrey returned to school and broke her school's record in the 4x800 meter relay.
