Studies show that, on average, about 30% of rural patients bypass local care providers. When this happens, valuable health care dollars leave the community and local hospitals face greater financial strain. But support is available for providers impacted by these choices. Technical assistance programs — like those administered by The Center — work to help hospitals address the challenges of patient bypass by improving operations, expanding services and building stronger connections with their communities, all necessary to strengthen the role of rural hospitals.
