Congratulations to this year’s recipient of the Owen Dettman Scholarship: Sofia Bondurant! The Owen Dettman Scholarship is an opportunity for a graduating senior from Uniting Voices Chicago to receive $5,000 per year for a four-year collegiate degree. It was created by Uniting Voices Board Member, Caroline Dettman, and her husband Adam Dettman, alongside their sons A.J. and Dawson.The annual scholarship goes to an individual who exemplifies their late son Owen’s unifying, creative and selfless spirit. “The Owen Dettman scholarship is one meaningful way we can honor what our son embodied to those that loved him as we did,” said Caroline Dettman. “Sofia carries forward an incredible love of the arts, an unwavering commitment to the development of her craft, and an infectious personality. We look forward to watching her star continue to shine on her chosen path of Jazz at the prestigious Eastman School of Music.” Sofia spent six years in Uniting Voices programs, getting her start in the Pilsen/Little Village Neighborhood Choir before joining Voice of Chicago. This year she was a member of Singers’ Council, where she developed collaborative leadership skills. Her fondest memories of the choir include last year’s performance at Chicago Symphony Center of jazz legend Christian McBride’s The Movement Revisited, and performing internationally in Mexico City and Oaxaca, including the last time she performed with last year’s graduating seniors, at the Festival Coral Infantil y Juvenil. Sofia will be attending the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music after graduating from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. She plans to continue the musical journey that she began with Uniting Voices and study Jazz Voice, where she will further develop her gifts as a talented jazz vocalist. (fb)
