We spent last Friday morning at the Central Hub in the Hill District planting Staghorn Sumac trees with CommunityCare Stewards and volunteers from BNY. Staghorn Sumac was chosen to create a shade cover to counter a Japanese knotweed infestation by lowering its density and to cut down on the amount of manual removal needed in the future. (fb)

Change Rooted in Community Mission Grounded Strategies works to improve the social economic and environmental health of distressed and transitional communities by building capacity to reclaim vacant and underutilized land. Background One of the legacies of Pittsburghs population decline are thousands of vacant lots. Vacant land in our region represents a complex environmental challenge that disproportionately burdens low income communities and communities of color. Restoring vacant land for productive use improves community health while creating economic and environmental benefits.
