You're invited to the Seventh Annual Lantern Walk, brought to you by the Friends of Fellsmere Heights - working to protect Fellsmere Park and preserve open space at the Malden Hospital site since 2015. Changes this year include the opportunity to color a pre-papered lantern, carry a lantern from previous years, or Bring Your Own (clear plastic) bottle! Thank you to those who attended the monthly Historical meetings since January, where Melrose Wakefield originally offered a bench and a marker to commemorate the 100+ year legacy of the Malden Hospital. FoFH letter of support stated:: "One priority of Malden’s citizens is that the former hospital – its history, its role in the community, and its importance as a site of healing and education – be memorialized appropriately." After monthly public hearings and public meetings, the April Historical Commission meeting, where Melrose Wakefield agreed to: - a bench and a marker and story boards. - list of items to be preserved from the Historical Commission consultant report - and most importantly, that the preservation work to be overseen by a real preservationists and not just a mason. While city leaders wrote unconditional support letters for the project, FoFH wrote a letter of support for the project, with one condition: "Our most critical remaining concern with regard to the historical elements to be saved from the Malden Hospital buildings is that a general demolition contractor will lack the complex skills needed to remove and store these elements with the best possible outcome." Thank you to the Malden Historical Commission for seeing the significance of using a preservationist vs a demolition contractor telling us nothing can be saved becasue it all fell apart during demolition.
