New Column: The Catholic "Both/And" Approach to Immigration https://t.co/mDjcMTKwBF https://t.co/46Q6qgraTe (tw)
The Catholic Church has a both/and approach to immigration expressed in two basic principles. On the one hand, the Church teaches that every person has a natural right to emigrate from his or her homeland and move to a new country for a better and more secure life (CCC 2211, 2241). On the other hand, the Church teaches that governments have an obligation to protect their own citizens and foster the common good by establishing and enforcing laws regulating and limiting the entry of immigrants into their territories (CCC 2241). And yet, enforcement of these laws must always respect the innate dignity of the immigrant and their basic human rights. In other words, the Church recognizes both an individual’s right to immigrate to another country in pursuit of a better life and the right of a nation to protect its own citizens by regulating immigrants who enter their homeland. The North Dakota Catholic Bishops Voice on Public Policy Formed in 1970 by the Roman Catholic Bishops of North Dakota the North Dakota Catholic Conference is the means by which the Catholic bishops of the state act together on public policy matters for the mutual wellbeing of the Catholic Church and all citizens throughout the state.
