Happy holidays. 2023 was a busy and productive year for the Karma & Jyamu Bhotia Foundation. The Foundation continues to support 14 hot lunch programs throughout the Bhotkhola region in northeastern Nepal. In addition, the Foundation established two new day care centers, in Hatiya and Hongon, resulting in a total of seven day care centers in the region. Each day care center costs ~5-6,000/year to run. The Foundation also is completing the construction of its first day care center building in Chyamtang through the generous donation from an individual donor. The Foundation also was able to fund three grist mills in Chyamtang, Ridak, and Chhumusur. These grist mills were requested by women in the villages to reduce labor associated with turning millet, corn, buckwheat, spelt and other grains into flour. The women can now use water to power the grist mill to reduce the time it takes to make flour by over 50%. The Foundation hosted three fundraisers this year in Durango, Telluride and one in Austria. Funds from these fundraisers and generous individual donations from you help support the mission of the Foundation. The Foundation is currently working to get the website refreshed and up to date. A future goal for the Foundation is long-term economic and sustainability for women through planting, growing, harvesting, and creating products to sell (e.g., aromatherapy or medicinal tinctures). Three benefits from this goal include: 1) empower women to be economically independent, 2) reduce the impact on natural vegetation by planting and growing what is harvested, and 3) sustainability for the Foundation to help fund future projects in the Bhotkhola region.
