República Dominicana: 11 febrero, 2025 [Yolanda y Mari están participando en este curso internacional único en la educación y capacitación avandada en las técnicas y prácticas de anillamiento de aves con nuestra entrenadora certificada de NABC (North American Banding Council) Holly Garrod.] Se inicia una semana más en República Dominicana amigos (@)! Continuamos con grandes expectativas, aunque el clima nos desafía. Sin embargo, no perdemos la fe de lograr conocer más sobre las aves de este maravilloso pedacito de tierra rodeado de océano. Así que, nos armamos de valor y nos trasladamos a un hermoso lugar que promete mucho! Cambiamos de sitio de la Serena por la Vera del Yaque debido a la baja captura que se generó por las lluvias, ¡Y realmente así es! Logramos más aves nuevas. Nos enamoramos cada vez mas de encontrar tesoros invaluables. La madre naturaleza nos sorprende y nos deja sin palabras! El habitad donde se encuentran aves extraordinarias como los Tody es sumamente hermoso, aves que nos dejan sin palabras por su forma de anidación en los paredones o barrancos. Estas son espacios de tierra libres un tanto libres de vegetación y lo que lo hace más curioso es su tamaño tan pequeño. Nuestra captura en la serena fue un total de 28 individuos con una recaptura de una Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens), dato muy interesante, Hispaniolan Spindalis (Spindalis dominicensis), Narrow-billed Tody (Todus angustirostris), Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo (Coccyzus longirostris), Hispaniolan Mango (Anthracothorax dominicus) y el Hispaniolan Woodpecker (Melanerpes striatus). La isla de Hispaniola tiene 32 especies de aves endémicas con una prioridad alta para la conservación y la biodiversidad global! Dominican Republic: February 11, 2025 [Yolanda and Mari are participating in this once-in-a-lifetime international course in continued education and training in hands-on bird banding techniques with our certified NABC trainer and colleague Holly Garrod.] Another week begins in the Dominican Republic! We continue with great expectations, although the weather challenges us. We do not lose faith, however, in getting to know more about the birds of this wonderful little piece of land surrounded by the gulf. So, we mustered up our courage and moved to a beautiful place that would hold great promise! We changed our location from La Serena to La Vera del Yaque due to the low numbers of birds due to the constant rain. It really was more promising, as we were able to band more new birds! We fell more and more in love with finding priceless treasures. Mother Nature surprises us and leaves us speechless! These extremely beautiful island habitats are where extraordinary birds are found, (such as the two endemic Broad-billed and Narrow-billed Tody species), birds that leave us speechless because of the way they nest on walls or in ravines. These are open spaces of land somewhat free of vegetation and what makes them more curious is their small size. There is so much to learn about these endemic birds in such a short amount of time. We captured a total of 28 individuals in La Serena including a recapture of a Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens), (a very interesting bird found in the cooler elevations of Costa Rica). Other notable birds banded were the Hispaniolan Spindalis (Spindalis dominicensis), Narrow-billed Tody (Todus angustirostris), Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo (Coccyzus longirostris), Hispaniolan Mango (Anthracothorax dominicus) and the Hispaniolan Woodpecker (Melanerpes striatus). Republica Dominicana: 5 febrero, 2025 Han sido días lluviosas participando en anillamiento en la Republica Dominicana con nuestra entrenadora Holly Garrod. El clima no ayuda mucho ya que llueve y se torna bastante frio, similar a San Vito. A pesar de esto, logramos el objetivo de tener aves nuevas en las manos, una experiencia que no sé cómo describir, es super maravilloso! Entre las aves anilladas tenemos: White-fronted Quail-Dove (Geotrygon leucometopia) Endémica de Hispaniola Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) Migratoria Neotropical Hispaniolan Emerald (Riccordia swainsonii) Red-legged Thrush (Turdus plumbeus) Rufous-throated Solitaire (Myadestes genibarbis) Black-crowned Palm-Tanager (Phaenicophilus palmarum) Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola) Black-faced Grassquit (Melanospiza bicolor) Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) Migratoria Neotropical La favorita hasta ahora ha sido White-fronted Quail-Dove ya que es endemica y muy difícil de observar por incluso los locales creen que es nuestra ave de la suerte. February 5, 2025 These have been rainy days participating in bird banding and continued training in the Dominican Republic with our trainer Holly Garrod. The weather is not helping much as it rains and becomes quite cold, similar to San Vito, despite this, we achieved the goal of having new birds in our hands, an experience that I don't know how to describe, it is super wonderful. We are fortunate to have this opportunity to meet new birds on a super beautiful island.
