If a dog ingests a penny produced after 1982, his stomach acid erodes the zinc in the coin, which causes zinc toxicosis. Zinc toxicosis is a potentially deadly condition. If a dog ingests a penny, it is an immediate medical emergency. If responded to quickly enough, a penny might be removed from the stomach by endoscopy and the dog is more likely to recover. A service dog that is never asked to retrieve coins is less likely to ingest a penny. (fb)
