Shortly after birth, Hunter was taken for a routine checkup, where doctors detected a heart murmur. Further evaluation revealed news no parent is ever prepared for—Hunter had three congenital heart defects: an atrial septal defect, a ventricular septal defect and coarctation of the aorta. At just five days old, he underwent open-heart surgery, led by our congenital cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Subhadra Shashidharan. Hunter spent several weeks recovering, facing multiple procedures and requiring a feeding tube. During this time, Hunter and his mom, Emily, found strength in the incredible support of their care team and other families on the unit.� Now, at five months old, Hunter is NG-tube free, thriving and has formed a special bond with his 2-year-old big sister, Makenna.
