Rotary Club of Dunwoody Weekly Meeting Recap The Rotary Club of Dunwoody hosted another successful weekly meeting at Maggiano's at Perimeter Mall this past Friday at 7:15 AM. Our club, which was awarded the 2025 Club of the Year for Rotary District 6900, continues to demonstrate how we Connect, Serve & Grow in our community. Visitors are always welcome. There is no better way to engage in our community than through this award-winning club. We were pleased to welcome several guests to our meeting: @Tom Lambert, City of Dunwoody - Government City Council member (introduced by Michael Starling) - Penn State graduate Dabney Daniels (introduced by Fred Brandt) - returning visitor who had previously joined us in 2001 Julia, our GRSP (Global Grant Recipient) student, attended her meeting with us Roy Bastio, our Rotary Youth Exchange Student at Dunwoody High School (reintroduced by Rick Woods) Featured Speaker: Sherry Boston DeKalb County District Attorney We were honored to welcome Sherry Boston, DeKalb County District Attorney, as our featured speaker on September 12th. Ms. Boston stands among the elite in prosecution as one of the rare 1% of African American females currently serving as district attorney nationwide. Since taking office in 2017, DA Boston has established innovative units including Human Trafficking and Internet Crimes, Digital Forensics, and Firearm Violence Prevention. She was the first district attorney in Georgia to mandate Implicit Bias training for all employees and has been repeatedly recognized by Atlanta Magazine as one of metro Atlanta's 500 Most Influential People. A graduate of Villanova University and Emory University School of Law, DA Boston resides in DeKalb County with her husband and two daughters. Community Updates and Events 2025 Atlanta Walk & Roll to Cure FSHD Members were encouraged to support the 2025 Atlanta Walk & Roll to Cure FSHD, the FSHD Muscular Dystrophy Support Society's largest annual fundraiser dedicated to raising funds for FSHD research, cures, and community support. FSHD (facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy) affects nearly 1 million people worldwide, causing progressive muscle weakness. More information and registration available at: https://give.fshdsociety.org/event/2025-atlanta-walk-and-roll-to-cure-fshd/e678744 Dunwoody Oktoberfest Participation Our club participated in Dunwoody Oktoberfest on September 27th at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Dunwoody, GA. Members manned a booth at this family-friendly festival, and Rick Woods noted that we had previously found one of our Rotary Youth Exchange Southeast host families at this event. Member Spotlight Dave Burr shared his visit to Clubhouse Atlanta, praising it as an excellent organization that aligns with our service values. Major Fundraiser Update: Whiskey & Spirits Raffle Our fall fundraiser entered its second week of prize collection with great momentum. We had collected 10 of our anticipated 30-40 premium bottles for the raffle, thanks to our partnership with Dunwoody Beverage liquor store. The partnership provided full tax deductibility for donations and a 10% contribution back to the club for every purchase. The fundraiser successfully reached our $25,000 goal with ticket sales at $25 each or 5 for $100, culminating in "Thirsty Thursday" on November 20th. Social Events The Dunwoody Diners held their September dinner and show event on September 20th with dinner at Aldo's in Sandy Springs followed by "The Producers" at City Springs Theatre Company. Ed Holliday also hosted a wine event on Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 PM - members were asked to email Ed for his address and any questions. Join us this Friday, September 12 at Maggiano's to welcome Sherry Boston, DeKalb County District Attorney. Sherry Boston stands among the elite in the world of prosecution as one of the rare 1% of African American females currently serving as district attorney nationwide. Ms. Boston was first elected as the district attorney for DeKalb County in 2016. In her capacity, DA Boston oversees the prosecution of felony offenses filed in the Superior Court of DeKalb County and supervises a staff of more than 300 people including attorneys, investigators, paralegals, victim advocates, and administrative professionals." Since taking the helm as district attorney in January 2017, Ms. Boston has assembled a diverse and highly experienced leadership team. She recognizes the critical role her office plays in the criminal justice system and was the first district attorney in Georgia to mandate Implicit Bias training for all employees. During her tenure, DA Boston has made it a priority to keep her office on the leading edge of crime trends establishing a Human Trafficking and Internet Crimes Unit, a Digital Forensics Unit, and a Firearm Violence Prevention Unit. Her office also works closely with the DeKalb County Police Department, DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation and others as part of the DeKalb County Cold Case Task Force. Atlanta Magazine has repeatedly lauded her as one of metro Atlanta’s 500 Most Influential People, featuring her on the coveted front cover of the publication in 2019. Through her work with the Institute for Innovation in Prosecution, DA Boston has also become an integral part of the national dialogue on criminal justice reform and innovative prosecution strategies specific to juvenile justice, reentry, and accountability initiatives. DA Boston served as one of the original appointees to the GRACE Commission, a statewide task force created in 2019 by Georgia’s First Lady to combat human trafficking.Prior to her role as district attorney, Ms. Boston served as DeKalb County solicitor-general, the elected prosecutor overseeing misdemeanor crimes. During her tenure as solicitor-general, Ms. Boston was instrumental in the development of DeKalb’s revamped Traffic Division and also implemented a wide variety of innovative programming and strategies aimed at community outreach and crime prevention. In addition to her elected positions, DA Boston has received numerous legal appointments and wide recognition for her innovative prevention/intervention initiatives and impassioned commitment to domestic violence awareness. In 2018, she received the Champion for Change Award from the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence for her leadership in the DV arena, including the development of two signature community awareness campaigns. In 2024, DA Boston was honored with awards on the national, state and local levels. Public Rights Project, a non-profit that works with local governments to protect civil rights, named DA Boston a 2024 Justice Seeker. The Georgia Association for Women Lawyers presented her with the Leading Lady Award, which is given to a GAWL member who is an exemplary leader in the legal profession and in the community, and Leadership DeKalb recognized DA Boston with a Distinguished Alumni Award. Several other organizations have also recognized DA Boston in recent years with awards for her public service. Among her varied involvement in community and legal organizations, District Attorney Boston is an active member of the State Bar of Georgia where she serves on the Board of Governors, the State Bar’s policy-making arm. District Attorney Boston is a graduate of Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Emory University School of Law. She resides in DeKalb County with her husband and two daughters. (fb)
