🦈 Shark conservation is gaining traction around the world, and the work happening in places like Belize, Mexico, Senegal, and beyond is both inspiring and essential. From reducing bycatch to shifting public perceptions, these efforts are helping build a future where sharks are seen not as threats, but as vital parts of healthy oceans. As our Executive Director, Dr. Rachel Graham, shared in Science News Magazine “Once people are invested in conserving sharks, they’re more willing to create and uphold rules that keep sharks alive.” This shift, from fear to fascination, is powerful. With continued local leadership and global support, there’s real hope for sharks’ future. (fb)
Fifty years ago, Jaws premiered and forever changed public perception of sharks 🎥🦈 While a landmark in cinematic history, the film also fueled widespread fear and misunderstanding of these vital marine species. At MarAlliance, we understand that fear has real-world consequences, contributing to sharp declines in shark populations and hindering conservation efforts globally, despite sharks being essential to healthy ocean ecosystems and playing a critical role in maintaining ecological balance. Dr. Rachel Graham, our Founder and Executive Director, recently spoke with Bloomberg about our ongoing conservation work in Belize. Through strong collaboration with the fishing industry, marine scientists, local partners, and coastal communities, shark conservation and sustainable tourism are advancing together. In Belize, shark-focused ecotourism is on the rise, and communities are increasingly recognizing sharks as part of their cultural heritage and a valuable economic opportunity. As we reflect on the legacy of Jaws, we invite you to join us in rewriting the story from fear to respect, from decline to stewardship. (fb)

We secure a future for marine wildlife. MarAlliance explores enables and inspires conservation action for threatened marine wildlife and their critical habitats working with dependent human communities. To do this we create new knowledge by monitoring the abundance and characteristics of species in key sites. We train local fishermen to help us at sea and engage our local communities to obtain information on sightings of important species.
