A few months back, Trout Unlimited joined the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, New York Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, Native Fish Coalition, Trout Power, SUNY ESF, and Paul Smith's College for the first-ever “Trek for Trout.” This historic, ambitious, and collaborative effort mobilized volunteers to update a final goal of over 400 unique conservation signs across a massive landscape with improved management policies on native Adirondack brook trout ponds, as well as a QR code survey to better understand the experiences of recreational hikers and anglers. NYSDEC worked incredibly hard on this program and relied upon the unique networks of dedicated volunteers from each organization, a testament to the power of grassroots conservation efforts across the state. Through powerful bursts of rain, grueling hikes, swarming black flies, and a lot of teamwork, volunteers knocked out nearly half of the 400 total signs and celebrated the effort with a proper New York BHA Pint Night Social afterwards.
