📌 Africa Grants: The Projects Safeguarding the Royal Court of Tiébélé project has received one of our small grants to preserve one of Burkina Faso’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Located in the Kassena region, the fifteenth-century Royal Court of Tiébélé is famed for its striking earthen architecture adorned with symbolic geometric patterns, reflecting the deep cultural heritage of the Kassena people. Led by Association @terres_d_espoir, the project promotes community awareness and pride through outreach in schools and universities, radio campaigns, theatre forums, and training programs for local youth and guides. These activities highlight the site’s historical and economic importance, encouraging sustainable cultural tourism as a driver for development. With ongoing involvement from village women and national heritage partners, the initiative ensures that Tiébélé’s legacy continues to thrive—visibly and meaningfully. HERITΛGE’s Grants for Africa are generously supported by the @mellonfoundation’s Humanities in Place program. This summer, HERITΛGE held its 11th Engaging Communities in Cultural Heritage Summer School, bringing together students, researchers, and practitioners from around the world for two enriching weeks of learning, exploration, and collaboration. The program kicked off with a week of online sessions introducing key concepts and approaches to community engagement in cultural heritage. Then, from June 23rd to July 6th, participants gathered on the beautiful island of Paros to deepen their understanding through hands-on fieldwork, academic discussions, and creative group activities.From theory to practice, the Summer School offered a unique opportunity to explore how communities connect with, preserve, and reinterpret their cultural heritage.
