A Quote We All Know. A Reminder We All Need: It wasn’t part of a campaign, or a morning announcement, or a school initiative. No deadline was involved. A thought from a young mind who grabbed a yellow sheet of paper, some markers, and wrote it down. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” It is a big quote. One that gets printed on walls, websites, and graduation speeches. But here, it is owned by the students. Internalised. Repeated. Believed. It is not about memorising the quote, it’s about living it. About children deciding this message matters enough to go up on a wall where others will see it. Fear is a daily reality for many women, fear of violence, of being silenced, of standing alone. In Andhra Pradesh, nearly 4 in 10 married women have faced domestic violence. Across India, 1 in 3 women has experienced it, according to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 2019–21. Yet most never speak of it. That’s why Abhaya, which means fearless, was born. To break the silence. To build strength. To stand together. In small rooms, in schools, community halls, across Kadapa and Chittoor wherever we could gather, women began to speak. Survivors. Single mothers. Young girls. Sharing stories buried for years. Since 2018, over 67,000 women have come together through thousands of such meetings, building 269 grassroots collectives, leading to the resolution of more than 1,200 cases of injustice. Some came unsure. Some just listened. However, over time, voices grew stronger. Truths were shared and the idea of being alone began to fade. Abhaya is a movement, built on connection, on knowing your rights, on reclaiming dignity. We have taken these conversations into colleges too, where students are hearing, sometimes for the first time, what consent and equality really mean. Since 2018, more than 56,000 students have sat in these rooms, questioning power, gender, and their own roles in it. They don’t always leave with answers, but they leave thinking. That matters. Abhaya shows up in the quiet moments, when a woman speaks without apology. When a girl says no and means it. When someone finally hears, “I believe you.” A fearless shift- steady, quiet, and real.
