F RIENDS OF MUSIC GIVES GRANT TO C.W. SHIPLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Friends of Music has given C.W. Shipley Elementary School in Harpers Ferry a grant of $350 to purchase various items for its music program. The items include a glockenspiel, a music method book, and a "stretchy band": a large, flexible loop of tubing used to teach music concepts like rhythm and beat through movement and cooperation. "We are very grateful for these grant items!" says music teacher Ally Colliflower. "The stretchy band and methods book will support more lessons with fun movement exploration, while the glockenspiel will allow my upper elementary students to play barred instruments together as a class." The accompanying photo shows some of Ms. Colliflower's students with the grant items. The donation is part of a Friend's grant program to support music education in Berkeley and Jefferson school. The grants typically involve instruments and music supplies not covered by regular school budgets. The grants are awarded annually based on applications submitted by music teachers. Friends of Music appreciates the additional funding support of Ecolab for this program. The Friends of Music organization is a Shepherdstown-based, non-profit organization founded in 1999 to support and promote musical excellence. It supports the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, the only professional classical music orchestra in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and one of only three such orchestras in the state.
