Wednesday Devotional Forgiveness as a Process We often think of forgiveness as a one-time decision—a moment when we declare, "I forgive you," and everything instantly changes. But for significant hurts, forgiveness rarely works this way. Instead, it's more like a journey than a single step. Forgiveness is a process. It's like carrying a heavy backpack full of bricks, where each brick represents a painful memory or emotion. We don't typically drop the entire backpack at once—we remove one brick at a time, sometimes having to pick up bricks we thought we'd already set down. If you've ever forgiven someone only to feel the pain resurface later, you haven't failed at forgiveness. This is simply part of the healing journey. Perhaps you see the person who hurt you, or something triggers a memory, and suddenly those feelings of hurt return. This doesn't mean your forgiveness wasn't genuine—it means the healing is ongoing. God understands this process. He knows our human limitations and the complexity of our emotions. He doesn't demand instant, perfect forgiveness—He walks with us through the process, helping us lay down one brick at a time. Today, be gentle with yourself if you're in the midst of this forgiveness journey. Acknowledge the progress you've made, even if it feels incomplete. Keep surrendering those bricks to God, trusting that with each one you release, you move closer to the freedom He desires for you Reflection What "bricks" of hurt or resentment are you still carrying, and how might viewing forgiveness as a process rather than a one-time event help you continue your healing journey? Prayer Heavenly Father, Thank you for your patience with me as I work through the process of forgiveness. Help me to be patient with myself too. I surrender to you the bricks of hurt I'm still carrying. Guide me as I continue this journey, and remind me that healing takes time. Thank you for walking with me every step of the way. Amen (fb)
