Local Advocates Call on Micron Technology to Protect Workers, Communities, Water, and Land As Micron Draft Environmental Impact Statement is released, groups request a better review process Syracuse, NY (June 26th, 2025) - 16 local, state, and national groups will hold a press conference June 26th, the day after the Micron Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) is due for public release. The groups will deliver a petition with over 1,500 signatories to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency (OCIDA) requesting a longer and more inclusive public input process, and announce new community agreements for Micron’s plan in New York. WHAT: Press conference highlighting community concerns and petition delivery to OCIDA WHO: SustainCNY Coalition (Alliance for a Green Economy, Faith Impact Team, NY Civil Liberties Union, Syracuse Urbanism Collective, Climate Change Awareness and Action, Moving People Transportation Coalition, CNY Solidarity Coalition, Greening USA, Energy21, Sterling Water Stewards, Skaneateles Lake Association, Central and Northern NY Sierra Club, Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation), SUNY-ESF and LeMoyne College professors, Citizen Action of NY, and Jobs to Move America WHEN: Thursday, June 26th, 10:30 AM WHERE: Outside OCIDA (Carnegie Building, 335 Montgomery St, Syracuse) WHY: Micron Technology, boosted by $20 billion in public subsidies, is coming to NY to build the largest microchip fabrication site (with four factories) in U.S. history. Micron has promised Central NY communities investments and 1,000s of good jobs, but the company has not yet made enforceable commitments. Micron is undergoing a combined federal (led by U.S. Department of Commerce) and state (led by OCIDA) environmental review on its plan, which is projected to have impacts on water and air quality beyond county, state, or national boundaries. The DEIS assesses the impacts of Micron’s plan, including on wetlands, endangered species, flooding, water quality, air quality and climate, worker safety and transportation, housing, and risks from toxic chemicals. Officials say they will only allow the federal minimum of 45 days for public comment. Advocates are instead requesting 120 days and five public hearings. (fb)
The draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for the construction and operation of Micron’s Clay, NY chip fabs is expected to be released soon, along with the NY State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR). For a project of this size and scope, the DEIS is likely to be at least a thousand pages long. The law provides for a public comment period of 45 days from the day the DEIS is released. This is the only opportunity for the community to comment on and influence decisions that will affect the impact of the Micron project on CNY’s environment. The 45-day comment period is not sufficient time for the community to review and prepare comments for a project with the potential impact that Micron's construction and operation will have on the central New York Community. A coalition of 12 CNY environmental and sustainability organizations have come together to form a coalition to address the environmental, economic, social and climate justice issues that the Micron project will bring to our community. The coalition, SustainCNY (www.sustaincny.org), is requesting a minimum of 120 days for public review and comment. Furthermore, we request that the US Department Of Commerce and the Onondaga County Industrial Development Authority (OCIDA) convene a minimum of five public hearings to be held at various locations throughout central New York, including Syracuse, Clay, and Oswego. To engage public support, SustainCNY has created a petition requesting an extension of the comment period to 120 days and a minimum of 5 public hearings to be held during the comment period. The link to the petition is here: https://bit.ly/ExtendMicronDEISCommentPeriod The deadline for the petition is extended to April 13 , 2025 (fb)
