In the Waldorf sciences we want the children to not only learn about phenomena, but to experience it hands on; to invent, create, experiment and test… time, time, time, time, time and again! 😅 In this way, they get to not only hear about the scientific process but also be in it, practicing teamwork, patience, and ingenuity. For this physics block, they were given the task of using simple machines; pulleys, inclined planes, wheels, screws, levers, and wedges to create a class contraption that performed some sort of task. The 7th grade worked so hard in 4 separate groups, creating their own Rube Goldberg style marble run. They then combined them all to perform the task of switching off the light. While doing so, they experienced energy transfer, incremental building of energy and momentum, speed, laws of gravity, and so many other principles of physics.
