Extreme Heat Advisory!! Our area is expected to have sustained high temperatures into the 90s with heat indexes well above 100. It is critical to remain hydrated and take frequent breaks if working outside. If possible limit outdoor working to 30 minutes at a time with a minimum 30 minute rest period in between. Hydration Info: Be sure to consume an adequate amount of water, electrolytes, and minerals. SmartWater, Gatorade, Powerade, natural lemonade and Pedialyte are all good options for replenishing and hydrating. Intermix with regular water. Avoid any caffeinated beverages including soft drinks, coffee, and tea. These will dehydrate you. Also avoid alcohol. Keep an eye on your family, friends, and neighbors. The young and elderly as especially susceptible to the heat. Heat Emergencies: Heat Cramps: Signs/Symptoms include painful muscle cramps, typically in the legs or abdomen; heavy sweating; flushed, moist skin. — Move to a cool area, rest, and hydrate. Heat Exhaustion: Signs/Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness or fatigue; dizziness or lightheadedness; nausea or vomiting; rapid shallow breathing; rapid, weak pulse; muscle cramps; headache; pale, cool, clammy skin; fainting. — Move immediately to a cool area, attempt hydration, use cool water or ice compress to help cool down (best areas for ice are the sides of the neck, in the armpits, and in the groin area against and between the legs), consider medical evaluation. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke if not treated. Heat Stroke: Signs/Symptoms include high body temperature (103F or higher); hot, red, dry, or damp skin; confusion or altered mental status; loss of consciousness; rapid, strong pulse; rapid, shallow breathing; nausea and vomiting; headache; seizures. — Move immediately to a cool area and seek immediate medical attention. Do not drive yourself, have someone else drive you to urgent care, the emergency department, or call 911. (fb)
