Seed Global Health

Overview

Seed Global Health is a U.S. nonprofit organization, formerly known as Global Health Service Corps, established in 2011. The organization focuses on strengthening healthcare systems in resource-limited countries by providing training and support for nurses, midwives, and physicians. Its primary goal is to build complete healthcare teams capable of delivering high-quality care and saving lives.

History

Seed Global Health was founded on the concept of enhancing global health through professional development and training. The idea was influenced by historical efforts to create international health service programs, including proposals by U.S. Senator Jacob Javits in 1979 and subsequent reports by the Institute of Medicine in 2005.

In 2012, Seed Global Health collaborated with the Peace Corps to launch the Global Health Service Partnership (GHSP), often described as a "Peace Corps for doctors and nurses." Through GHSP, Seed has deployed volunteers to train healthcare professionals in several African countries.

Purpose and Activities

Seed Global Health addresses the significant health workforce shortage in sub-Saharan Africa, where countries bear 24% of the world's disease burden with only a fraction of the global healthcare workforce. By partnering with ministries of health, health professional schools, hospitals, and clinics, Seed educates over 45,000 health workers across seven countries, impacting healthcare for more than 76 million people.

Their mission includes training healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality services, advocating for policies supporting health workers, and building comprehensive health systems. Seed works in countries such as Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Leadership and Partnerships

  • CEO: Dr. Vanessa Kerry, MD, MSc, who is also a prominent advocate for integrating health considerations into climate change mitigation efforts.
  • Chief Medical Officer: Dr. Sadath Sayeed, MD, JD.
  • Affiliations: Seed Global Health collaborates with organizations like the Peace Corps and Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Global Health, and receives support from programs such as PEPFAR.

Impact and Recognition

Seed Global Health is recognized for its significant contributions to global health, particularly in resource-constrained regions. Its model of long-term investment in healthcare workforce development has been noted for its potential to sustainably improve health outcomes.

Health Workers Save Lives Building the health workforce of the future THE CHALLENGE A Health Worker Shortage The countries of subSaharan Africa shoulder 24 percent of the worlds disease burden with only 3 percent of the global health workforce. And by 2030 Africas health worker shortage is expected to exceed six million. Despite the crucial role health workers play in saving lives less than 7 percent of global health funding has been invested in the health workforce since 2010. At Seed Global Health were working to change this.
