Southern Memorial Association

The Southern Memorial Association (SMA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Lynchburg, Virginia, primarily responsible for managing Old City Cemetery on behalf of the City of Lynchburg. Founded on April 26, 1866, the SMA was originally known as the Ladies Memorial Association, with its first president being Susan Walker Bocock. The organization's early mission was to protect and beautify Civil War graves within the cemetery by constructing a permanent wall.

History and Activities

SMA was formed in response to the condition of Old City Cemetery following the Civil War. Initially, the cemetery lacked proper fencing, leaving it vulnerable to desecration. The primary goal of SMA was to enclose the cemetery with a brick wall, which was completed in May 1868. Over time, SMA expanded its focus beyond the Confederate Section to care for the entire cemetery. This shift occurred under the leadership of Jane Baber White in the early 1980s.

Throughout its history, SMA has led Lynchburg's Memorial Day ceremonies, often organizing parades and processions to the cemetery. The organization is responsible for numerous improvements and constructions within Old City Cemetery, including the central obelisk, stone archway, and several thousand soldiers' headstones. Modern projects under SMA include the construction of the Comfort House, enhancement of landscapes, and the creation of horticultural collections.

Evolution and Impact

SMA transitioned from being solely focused on Confederate graves to encompassing the entire 27-acre property. This change led to SMA receiving official non-profit status and renaming itself from "Lynchburg Confederate Memorial Association" to its current name. The organization's efforts have transformed Old City Cemetery into a major tourist destination and historic site in Lynchburg, with the SMA publishing several books, including the award-winning cookbook Food to Die For.

Current Status

SMA continues to work collaboratively with the City of Lynchburg, ensuring the preservation and beautification of Old City Cemetery. All members and officers of SMA have historically been volunteers, with the first paid staff hired in 2000. Today, SMA remains committed to its mission, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2016 with the construction of the Comfort House among other projects.
