In Loving Memory Kendal Mae (2015-2017) At three months, twin sisters Kenedi and Kendal were both diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). One round of treatment led to remission - and for a time, both girls were healthy. But a year later, their paths diverged. Kenedi continued to improve, but Kendal’s cancer came back. Less than eight months after her relapse, Kendal passed away. She was only 2 years old. Eight years later, her family is still asking the same question: Why were today’s cancer treatments enough to save one identical twin, but not the other? And when kids like Kendal relapse, why can’t we offer them something better? Now, we have the opportunity to do just that. A new clinical trial led by researchers at the University of Minnesota is harnessing Natural Killer (NK) cells and a child’s own immune system to fight relapsed AML.
