What steps should we take to solve the housing crisis in a sustainable way? In this interview with FORESGHT Climate & Energy, WorldGBC's Stephen Richardson, Senior Impact Director, joins Sean Carroll, Cities & Buildings Editor, in conversation to analyse the housing crisis around the world today. Housing has become increasingly unaffordable and while mass-construction of cheap homes appears to offer a quick fix, how can we address the long-term costs and climate damage effects? Here are some key takeaways from the conversation: 🏡 The housing crisis Is not just a supply problem, it's also a symptom of economic inequality. In many cases we have homes and buildings sitting vacant or underused. Simply fixating on new build targets is not the answer and may increase the climate impact of the sector. 🌿 Scaling back green regulations is a false economy with longterm costs. Rolling back sustainability standards might seem like a quick fix, but it only creates bigger financial and environmental problems down the line. Green homes reduce running costs, improve health, and build resilience — making them the smarter economic choice over time. 💰 Green, affordable housing Is feasible now — with the right financing models. By getting creative with how we finance sustainable housing, using a range of solutions such as green mortgages or shared ownership models, we can make greener homes accessible for everyone. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 At our recent #BuildingLife Summit on 3 June 2025, we took a deep dive into how we can link affordability with sustainability across the European landscape and beyond.
