Texas is fighting to #ENDALZ at the ballot box 🗳️, and the Association is leading the charge to drive change. Earlier this year, the state legislature established the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT). Now it’s up to the voters to decide whether or not to fund it. That’s where Proposition 14 comes in. If voters approve Proposition 14 on the November 4 ballot, Texas will invest $3 billion over 10 years for dementia research, creating the largest state-funded dementia research program in the country — becoming a model for other states. We’re incredibly proud to support Proposition 14 and the hope that it will bring to the 460,000 Texans living with Alzheimer’s and their 1 million unpaid caregivers and to all Americans living with dementia. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to impact the course of the disease and accelerate research opportunities. Learn more about #VoteYesOnAlz14: bit.ly/4otjBbu. (fb)
When Greg’s sister, Sheri, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he and his wife, Patti, didn’t have any experience with the disease. They were both surprised to learn how common Alzheimer’s is in people who have Down syndrome. Sheri loved to read, watch television, go on walks and dance. She worked at the same job for 17 years and loved her routine. In her 20s, Sheri participated in the Special Olympics in California, where she received a silver medal. Her mother started to notice that Sheri would lose things. like her keys or her purse. After a visit to the emergency room and further testing, it became clear that Sheri—at the age of 57—had younger-onset Alzheimer’s. Sheri died with the disease three years later. Greg and Patti decided they wanted to help find a way to end this disease. Through their company, they became a local sponsor for Walk to End Alzheimer’s and encouraged others to join them. “We’re committed to the cause,” said Patti. “In our hearts we want to do this. We want to do this for Sheri. [Greg’s] mom would have wanted us to do something like this.” Join Greg, Patti and the many others honoring their loved ones at Walk to End Alzheimer’s by starting or joining a team today: alz.org/walk.
