2 Cadwell avenue Waverly, NY Old number was 100 This home was built in 1952. Louis Marcus Dean Jr. and his wife, Elsie Blanche Coleman Dean, were the first owners of this home built in 1952. Previously from the 1950 census - 539 Clark street Waverly, NY - Elbert S. Coleman 81 yo.; wife Minnie M. Coleman 71 yo.; son-in-law Louis M. Dean 51 yo., district manager rubber company; daughter Elsie C. Dean 59 yo. Louis Dean was born Feb. 2, 1899 in Elmira, NY. He died on June 20, 1975. Elsie Blanch Coleman Dean was born in 1898 and died in 1991. They are buried in the Chemung Village cemetery, Chemung NY. Louis and Elsie were married on Oct. 24, 1920. May 6, 1952 The Evening Times - Waverlyites Have House but No Number; Their Problem Is Confusing to Village Trustees, Too. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dean of ? Cadwell avenue have a beautiful new home but no house number with which to designate it. They took their problem to Waverly village trustees and it was reported as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Dean have purchased a new brick home on Cadwell avenue. The brick house was constructed on a lot that had formerly been attached to a corner property facing on Chemung street but since sold as a separate lot facing on Cadwell avenue. Residing at 2 Cadwell avenue is R. F. Bartholomew. The Deans want a house number. Mr. Dean is a salesman and already his mail has been mixed up because of the lack of one. Village trustees suggested the “0” and “00” but under the “0” suggestion Waverly postal employees remarked people would say he lives on O’Cadwell avenue and sooner or later the street name would be confused. It was suggested that possibly Mr. Bartholomew would consider 1 1-2 Cadwell avenue as his house number and allow the Deans to have No. 2. Mr. Bartholomew’s sister, when first contacted, was reported to have approved the 1 1-2 number but Mr. Bartholomew said no because it would, “affect the value of his property.” However, it was reported he would consider the half-number if trustees would lower his property assessment. Trustees finally decided to offer the Deans the “2-A” house number and thought they had decided the problem if the Deans would accept. Contacted this morning, Mrs. Dean said, “No,” to this proposal and stated that she and Mr. Dean would carry out their original idea. They are going to canvass the east side of Cadwell avenue and see if all residents there will move their numbers up to the next even number, thus making No. 2 available to them. Mrs. Dean was encouraged today for already a few of the residents had consented to go along. May 22, 1952 The Evening Times - Dean House Is 100 Cadwell Ave. The problem of a house number for the new brick home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dean of Cadwell avenue, Waverly, has been solved. Village trustees last night agreed, at the request of the Deans, to assign the number, “100,” to designate their residence. The trouble all began when the rear lot of the corner house facing on Chemung street and located at the corner of Chemung street and Cadwell avenue was sold and a house, facing on Cadwell avenue, was constructed. The Deans had no house number and efforts to obtain a suitable one were futile. The home of R. F. Bartholomew, who resides the first house north of the Deans, is designated No. 2 and when efforts to change the whole numbering system on the east side of the street failed, the Deans suggested to trustees that they be given No. 100. The highest number listed on Cadwell avenue, which is a short two-block street, is 49. (137 Chemung street was on the corner of Chemung street and Cadwell ave.) June 10, 1952 The Evening Times - (Picture of today’s 2 Cadwell ave.) Dean Home in Waverly Is Designed for Beauty, Comfort. The recently completed brick home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis M. Dean of 100 Cadwell avenue, Waverly, is built with attractiveness, durability and the unique in mind. It’s out of the ordinary to find the kitchen at the front of the house, but the circular part of the structure at the left end of the home provides for an ideal modern kitchen as well as a beauty feature for the outside.
