In South Asia, a baby was born into freedom just one day after IJM’s local partner worked with authorities to rescue 22 people from brutal bonded labor on a sugarcane farm. For three years, the owner refused to let them leave, beat them with sugarcane stalks, and even denied medical care to the pregnant woman. When officials first inspected the farm, he tried to cover up the abuse by chasing the laborers away. But IJM’s partner and committed local authorities refused to back down. They pressed on until they located the families, confirmed the violence, and issued official release certificates to cancel their false debts.
