What started over a decade ago inside those walls—as a vision shared by incarcerated women determined to end the cycle of punishment and separation—has grown into a national and international movement rooted in the leadership of directly impacted women and girls. Since its founding, The National Council has led clemency campaigns, built policy platforms, organized national marches, supported reentry for countless women, and cultivated a vibrant network of justice-impacted leaders. From the halls of Congress to communities across the country, the impact has been undeniable. Yet, the work is far from finished. The systems that criminalize and cage women—particularly Black, Brown, and Indigenous women—remain firmly in place. But so, too, does the unwavering commitment to ending incarceration once and for all. More than a decade later, The National Council stands as a living testament to what is possible when those most harmed lead the way.
