🔍 What’s the connection between mental health and youth in the juvenile justice system? For far too long, the answer was: very little. That gap in understanding came with serious consequences—limited access to individualized care, a lack of evidence-based treatments, and little to no focus on mental well-being. Today, we know better. Youth in the juvenile justice system aren't just in the system because they made bad choices. These kids are shaped by powerful and painful experiences: poverty, child abuse, parents with mental health conditions and substance abuse issues, and so much more. These early traumas manifest as emotional dysregulation, behavioral challenges, and mental health struggles that follow youth through their formative years, and without proper interventions, ultimately into the juvenile justice system.
