Taking home our first place win in the “trailer” category. Our short documentary film was also accepted into this festival and was screened the first night of the event. People noticed and watched it! Due to time constraints, we did not have the opportunity to make remarks when we went up to get our award; the three of us were going to go up, and had we been able to make comments, this is what we were going to say: Thank you for recognizing our film. Like many of the issues represented at this festival ours is part of a larger issue …. And that is the three of us, along with about 100 others, were affected by our mothers being given the drug thalidomide during their pregnancies … which resulted in our birth defects. Yet we were told all of our lives that the FDA never approved thalidomide, and our appearance was just a coincidence. Over the decades, the US has remained the only civilized nation to NOT provide assistance to its thalidomide survivors. And so we are advocating for our brothers and sisters affected by the drug. We are seeking assistance from our legislators. And this film is part of this advocacy. (fb)
